breaking on the shore

hello, lover ...

what gift are you bestowing upon me?
I will not know until I can look back
and string together the events that tied us
karmically, entangled, irrational,
decisions made based on instinct and longing,
biology and curiosity.

we both knew it wouldn't continue,
but against our better judgement
we rode the swells, the tides,
until we hit the shores
dispersing, releasing, settling
back to where we came from
waved at each other, saying goodbye
without words; only a nod, a trance
broken by nature, by what's pulling us next
by the past that lingered, by promises we could not make.

we broke on the shore, so time may do its work:
spread us deep into the earth's table,
trickling through for purification, hitting the bottom,
shooting back up, to be renewed, beginning, again.

hello, stranger ...
